How to Prepare for API 577: An 8-Week Study Plan
An 8-week study plan for the API 577 exam, built around the body of knowledge weighting: welding processes, ASME IX qualification, metallurgy, defects and NDE.

API 577 is a closed-book exam. You cannot look anything up, so the preparation is about recall and judgement, not about finding your way around a code book. This plan spreads the work over eight weeks and gives each area time in proportion to how much of the exam it carries.
Short answer: 110 questions in 3.25 hours, of which 100 are scored, closed-book. About two minutes a question. Spend the most time on ASME Section IX qualification and on the metallurgical effects of welding, which carry about a quarter of the exam each, and finish with timed full-length practice.
What the exam looks like
- 110 questions, of which 100 are scored. The other 10 are unscored pretest items, mixed in without being identified.
- 3.25 hours, which works out at a little under two minutes a question.
- Closed-book. No paper or reference material is allowed. This is the main difference from API 510, 570 and 653, which include an open-book part.
- The references are API RP 577 (3rd Edition) and ASME Section IX, Part QW.
Where the marks are
| Area | Share of the exam |
|---|---|
| Welding processes and procedures (SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, SAW, the WPS) | About 15% |
| Welder and procedure qualification (ASME IX) | About 25% |
| Metallurgical effects of welding (HAZ, hydrogen cracking, lamellar tearing, PWHT) | About 25% |
| Weld defects and acceptance criteria | About 20% |
| Inspection techniques and NDT awareness (VT, RT, UT, MT, PT) | About 15% |
Half the exam is ASME IX and metallurgy. Candidates who learned welding on the job, without studying the formal qualification rules, most often lose marks on ASME IX: which variables are essential, so that changing one means requalifying, and which are not.
The eight weeks
Week 1: orientation and welding processes
Read the scope of API RP 577 and list the processes it covers. For each process, know what it is used for, its main advantages and limits, and the parameters a WPS controls. The aim is to recognise whether the process used on a joint matches what the WPS calls for.
Weeks 2 and 3: ASME Section IX
Work through how a procedure is qualified (the PQR, test coupons, the tests), how a welder is qualified to use it (the WPQ), and the difference between essential and nonessential variables. Make your own table of essential variables by process. Practise questions that give a change and ask whether requalification is needed.
Weeks 4 and 5: metallurgy
Study how welding changes the base metal in the heat-affected zone, then the failure modes that follow: hydrogen-induced cracking in susceptible steels, lamellar tearing in restrained joints, and why preheat and post-weld heat treatment are used. Link each mechanism to what an inspector would see and what would prevent it.
Week 6: defects and acceptance
Learn the common defects (porosity, slag inclusions, incomplete fusion, undercut, cracks) and, more importantly, how acceptance works: a defect is not automatically a rejection. Its size and location against the governing code decide it. The exam often tests the difference between an acceptable discontinuity and a rejectable defect.
Week 7: inspection and NDT
Cover visual inspection technique and which NDT method suits which situation when signing off a weld. You need to choose the right method and know its limits, not to be qualified in it.
Week 8: timed practice and review
Sit at least one full-length, timed, closed-book mock: 110 questions in 3.25 hours with nothing on the desk. Mark it, then go back to the areas where you dropped marks rather than re-reading what you already know.
Habits that help
- Practise without notes from the start. The exam is closed-book, so your practice should be too.
- Keep an error log. For every question you get wrong, write down why. Patterns show up quickly.
- Pace yourself. Two minutes a question. Flag the slow ones and come back to them.
Before you start
Check you are eligible first; holders of API 510, 570 or 653 qualify automatically. Our guide to API 577 eligibility covers the routes.
