AMPP CP1 Cathodic Protection TesterExam Guide & Preparation

AMPP CP1 Cathodic Protection Tester is the entry-level credential in AMPP's Cathodic Protection certification program, validating your ability to observe, record, and measure the effectiveness of galvanic and impressed-current CP systems on underground and submerged metallic structures. AMPP was formed by the 2021 merger of NACE International and SSPC, so this credential is still frequently referenced as "NACE CP1" in job postings, it's the same program under AMPP's current name.

Overview & Scope

AMPP CP1 Cathodic Protection Tester is the entry-level credential in AMPP's Cathodic Protection certification program, validating your ability to observe, record, and measure the effectiveness of galvanic and impressed-current CP systems on underground and submerged metallic structures. AMPP was formed by the 2021 merger of NACE International and SSPC, so this credential is still frequently referenced as "NACE CP1" in job postings, it's the same program under AMPP's current name.

The current Theory Exam (test code NACE-CP1-001), effective November 21, 2025, runs 100 multiple-choice questions across 3 hours, of which 81 are scored and 19 are unscored pretest items, up from the prior 81-question, 2.5-hour format. It's delivered by computer-based testing at Pearson VUE, and while the course manual itself isn't provided during the exam, reference material for equations and conversions is supplied as a PDF.

Beyond the Theory Exam, certification also requires the CP1 Practical exam, delivered during the CP1 course itself, successful completion of the Ethics for the Corrosion Professional course, and an approved application. AMPP recommends at least 6 months of CP-related work experience before attempting certification, though the course itself has no formal prerequisite.

Whether you're looking for a structured AMPP CP1 course, self-paced AMPP CP1 online training, or simply a focused way to study for AMPP CP1 certification requirements around a working schedule, EIM's AMPP CP1 training platform is built to fit all three.

CP1 vs CP2 vs CP3 vs CP4

AMPP's Cathodic Protection program runs CP1 through CP4 as a sequential progression, not four independent certifications. CP1, this certification, is the entry point with no formal prerequisite beyond the recommended 6 months of experience. CP2 (Cathodic Protection Technician) requires holding CP1 plus additional documented field experience. CP3 (Cathodic Protection Technologist) requires CP2 plus further experience and adds CP system design fundamentals. CP4 (Cathodic Protection Specialist), the senior level, requires CP3 plus extensive design and program-management experience.

CP1 is specifically scoped to testing and field measurement, not CP system design. If your role involves designing cathodic protection systems rather than testing and monitoring existing ones, CP1 is still the required starting point, but you'll eventually need to progress to CP3 or CP4 for design-level competency to be certified.

Qualification & Prerequisites

Direct Qualification
Not applicable, CP1 has no prerequisite certification, it's the entry point into AMPP's Cathodic Protection program.
Combination Route
The CP1 course itself has no required prerequisite, though AMPP recommends at least 6 months of CP-related work experience before attempting certification. Certification requires a high school diploma or GED, the ability to perform basic math calculations (algebra, fractions, conversions), completion of the CP1 Practical exam during the course, the Theory Exam, the Ethics for the Corrosion Professional course, and an approved application. Candidates have up to 4 years to complete all requirements.
BODY OF KNOWLEDGE

What the Exam Actually Tests

Five domains, weighted by question share. This is the map the question bank is built directly against.

01Corrosion Fundamentals

Electrochemistry, oxidation-reduction reactions, Ohm's law, Faraday's law

02Installation & Field Measurement

Structure-to-soil potential measurement, current and voltage measurement, soil resistivity testing

03Equipment & Equipment Management

Reference electrodes, multimeters, shunts, test stations

04Industry Practices

Recordkeeping, basic troubleshooting for shorts, industry standard practices

05Safety

Personal protective equipment, hazard recognition, site-specific safety procedures

01. Corrosion Fundamentals

Covers the underlying electrochemistry that makes cathodic protection work: how corrosion occurs as an electrochemical process, oxidation-reduction reactions, and the basic electrical laws, Ohm's law and Faraday's law, that govern how CP systems counter corrosion on buried or immersed metal.

02. Installation & Field Measurement

The largest single domain by question weight, testing hands-on field measurement skills: structure-to-soil potential readings, voltage and current measurement, soil resistivity testing using the Wenner method, continuity checks, and stray current identification. This domain reflects CP1's core role as a field-testing credential.

03. Equipment & Equipment Management

Covers the equipment a CP1 technician uses day to day, reference electrodes, multimeters, shunts, and test stations, including proper use, care, and basic troubleshooting when equipment readings look inconsistent.

04. Industry Practices

Covers recordkeeping practices and basic troubleshooting procedures for identifying shorts and continuity issues in CP systems, the documentation and diagnostic discipline that connects individual field readings into a usable maintenance history.

05. Safety

Covers safety considerations specific to CP field testing work: personal protective equipment, hazard recognition around buried utilities and energized systems, and site-specific procedures a CP1 technician needs to follow in the field.

How to Register and What to Expect on Exam Day

Candidates register directly through AMPP, not through EIM or any third-party training provider. The CP1 Theory Exam is delivered via computer-based testing at Pearson VUE, while the Practical exam is administered as part of the CP1 course itself.

AMPP's official fee for the CBT theory exam alone (or a retake) is $275; the exam fee is included in the CP1 course fee for candidates who attend the course. This is separate from EIM's AMPP CP1 self-prep pricing. Certification is valid for 3 years and serves as the prerequisite background for CP2.

Sample Practice Questions

02: Installation & Field Measurement

A technician is measuring soil resistivity using the Wenner four-pin method. What does increasing the pin spacing primarily allow the technician to assess?

A. Resistivity at a shallower depth only
B. Resistivity at a greater average depth, since pin spacing corresponds to the depth of the resistivity measurement
C. Nothing, pin spacing has no effect on measurement depth
D. Only the resistivity of the pins themselves, not the soil
Explanation: In the Wenner four-pin method, the pin spacing approximately corresponds to the depth at which the resistivity measurement is being averaged. Increasing pin spacing allows the technician to assess resistivity at greater average depth, useful for understanding soil conditions at the depth where a buried structure or anode bed will actually sit.
01: Corrosion Fundamentals

In a galvanic cathodic protection system, what electrochemical role does the sacrificial anode play relative to the structure being protected?

A. It acts as the cathode, receiving protective current
B. It acts as the anode, corroding preferentially to protect the structure, which becomes the cathode
C. It has no electrochemical role, only a physical support function
D. It accelerates corrosion of the structure it's connected to
Explanation: In a galvanic CP system, the sacrificial anode is deliberately more electrochemically active than the structure, so it corrodes preferentially, acting as the anode, while the protected structure becomes the cathode and is shielded from corrosion. This is the fundamental electrochemistry every CP1 candidate needs to understand cold.

Why AMPP CP1 Cathodic Protection Tester Matters for Asset Integrity Careers

The November 2025 format change, from 81 questions in 2.5 hours to 100 questions in 3 hours, added 19 unscored pretest questions without changing the number of questions that actually count toward your score. Candidates studying from older material referencing the 81-question, 2.5-hour format should confirm they're using current preparation resources, since the exam day experience has meaningfully changed.

Because reference material is provided as a PDF for equation and conversion questions, effective AMPP CP1 exam preparation should include practicing with that reference format, not just memorizing formulas cold. EIM's AMPP CP1 question bank is built around the exam's real weighting toward field measurement and installation, since that's where the bulk of the exam's questions concentrate.
