AMPP ICT Internal Corrosion TechnologistExam Guide & Preparation

AMPP ICT Internal Corrosion Technologist certifies your ability to monitor an internal corrosion control program for liquid and natural gas pipelines used in transmission, storage, and distribution, through field testing, data assessment, and mitigation method selection. AMPP was formed by the 2021 merger of NACE International and SSPC, so this credential is still frequently referenced as "NACE ICT" in job postings.

Overview & Scope

AMPP ICT Internal Corrosion Technologist certifies your ability to monitor an internal corrosion control program for liquid and natural gas pipelines used in transmission, storage, and distribution, through field testing, data assessment, and mitigation method selection. AMPP was formed by the 2021 merger of NACE International and SSPC, so this credential is still frequently referenced as "NACE ICT" in job postings.

The ICT Theory Exam (test code NACE-ICT-001) is 75 multiple-choice questions over 2.5 hours, closed-book, computer-based testing, scored pass/fail with a bar chart of strengths and weaknesses by domain provided afterward. Reference material for conversions and applicable standards is supplied as a PDF, but the course manual itself is not provided during the exam.

Certification requires more than passing the Theory Exam alone: candidates must also pass a separate Practical Exam, complete the Internal Corrosion for Pipelines Basic Course (recommended), and submit an approved application. Completing the course by itself does not entitle a candidate to certification.

Whether you're looking for a structured AMPP ICT course, self-paced AMPP ICT online training, or simply a focused way to study for AMPP ICT certification requirements around a working schedule, EIM's AMPP ICT training platform is built to fit all three.

ICT vs Senior Internal Corrosion Technologist vs Internal Corrosion Specialist

ICT is the entry point in AMPP's internal corrosion certification pathway. Successful ICT candidates can progress to Senior Internal Corrosion Technologist, an advanced-level credential built on ICT's foundation, and ultimately to Internal Corrosion Specialist (ICS), the top-tier credential requiring an active Senior ICT certification plus either a bachelor's degree in physical science or engineering with 8 years of experience, or 12 years of verifiable internal corrosion experience, along with the Ethics for the Corrosion Professional course.

ICT itself is scoped to field monitoring and intermediate-level problem-solving within a pipeline system, selecting mitigation methods and supporting an internal corrosion integrity management program, not designing or managing that program independently at a senior level. That broader design and program-management scope belongs to the Senior and Specialist tiers above it.

Qualification & Prerequisites

Direct Qualification
Not applicable, there is no auto-qualify certification pathway for ICT, eligibility runs through the work experience and education requirements below.
Combination Route
Choose one of two work experience routes: 4 years of verifiable internal corrosion-related work experience in a pipeline environment, or a bachelor's degree in biology, microbiology, chemistry, chemical engineering, or metallurgical engineering plus 2 years of verifiable internal corrosion-related work experience. Certification also requires passing both the Theory and Practical exams and an approved application, completing the recommended course alone does not grant certification.
BODY OF KNOWLEDGE

What the Exam Actually Tests

Four domains, weighted by question share. This is the map the question bank is built directly against.

01Basics: Corrosion Theory

Basic corrosion cell composition, electrochemical reactions, forms and mechanisms of corrosion

02Assessment of Internal Corrosion

Indirect and direct assessment methods, locating internal corrosion damage (ICDA), monitoring strategy

03Internal Corrosion Mitigation

Mitigation method selection, corrosion inhibitors, biocides, maintenance pigging, implementation and effectiveness

04Long-Term Integrity Management

Data integration, significance of key data relationships

01. Basics: Corrosion Theory

Covers the composition of a basic corrosion cell and its electrochemical reactions, identifying forms of corrosion, corrosion mechanisms, and corrosive species, and understanding how different operating conditions, environments, and facility types impact the internal corrosion process.

02. Assessment of Internal Corrosion

The largest domain by a wide margin, covering indirect methods (gas, liquid, and solid analysis, predictive models, sample collection and preservation), direct methods (device selection, corrosion coupons, electronic probes, detection device limitations), locating internal corrosion damage including Internal Corrosion Direct Assessment (ICDA) methodology and hydrostatic testing parameters, and monitoring strategy and technique selection.

03. Internal Corrosion Mitigation

Covers identifying and selecting appropriate mitigation methods for a given pipeline environment, including materials selection, maintenance pigging, corrosion inhibitors, and biocides, plus understanding when to implement a mitigation method and how to determine whether a mitigation program is actually effective.

04. Long-Term Integrity Management

The smallest domain by weight, covering the significance of key data and data relationships as they support a long-term internal corrosion integrity management program, connecting field-level monitoring data to broader program-level decision-making.

How to Register and What to Expect on Exam Day

Candidates register directly through AMPP, not through EIM or any third-party training provider. Certification requires passing both the Theory Exam and a separate Practical Exam, plus an approved Internal Corrosion Technologist application, completing the recommended course alone does not grant certification.

Check AMPP's current fee schedule for official course and exam pricing, which is separate from EIM's AMPP ICT self-prep pricing. Certification validity and renewal terms should be confirmed against AMPP's current published requirements.

Sample Practice Questions

02: Assessment of Internal Corrosion

A field technician needs to select a technique to assess internal corrosion risk along a natural gas pipeline without direct physical access to the pipe interior at every location. Which category of assessment method is most appropriate for this scenario?

A. Direct methods only, such as corrosion coupons requiring physical installation at each point
B. Indirect assessment methods, using gas or liquid analysis and predictive models to evaluate the environment without physical access at every point
C. Hydrostatic testing exclusively, regardless of the pipeline's operational status
D. No assessment is possible without excavating the pipeline at every suspected location
Explanation: Indirect assessment methods, analyzing gas, liquid, or solid samples and applying predictive models, allow a technician to evaluate internal corrosion risk across a pipeline system without requiring physical access or installation at every individual location, unlike direct methods such as coupons or probes that require physical placement.
03: Internal Corrosion Mitigation

Which of the following are recognized internal corrosion mitigation methods for pipeline systems? SELECT TWO OPTIONS.

A. Maintenance pigging
B. Corrosion inhibitor injection
C. Increasing pipeline operating pressure
D. Removing all internal coating from the pipeline
Explanation: This is a SELECT TWO OPTIONS item: maintenance pigging and corrosion inhibitor injection are both recognized internal corrosion mitigation methods. Increasing operating pressure and removing internal coating are not standard mitigation approaches and would generally worsen, not improve, internal corrosion conditions.

Why AMPP ICT Internal Corrosion Technologist Matters for Asset Integrity Careers

The official AMPP exam blueprint weights "Assessment of Internal Corrosion" at 45-50%, roughly half the entire exam, spanning indirect assessment methods (gas, liquid, and solid analysis), direct methods (corrosion coupons, electronic probes, monitoring device selection), locating internal corrosion damage (including Internal Corrosion Direct Assessment, ICDA, methodology), and monitoring strategy. Candidates who under-study this domain relative to corrosion theory or mitigation are underpreparing for roughly half the actual exam.

The exam also includes multi-select questions (SELECT TWO OPTIONS style) alongside standard multiple-choice and matching items, so preparation should include practicing that format specifically, not just single-answer recall. EIM's AMPP ICT question bank is built around the exam's real weighting toward assessment methodology, with dedicated multi-select practice items matching the actual exam format.
