Unlike API's equipment-specific inspector certifications, API 1169 covers a construction process end to end, survey, grading, ditching, pipe stringing and field bending, welding and coating inspection, lowering-in, backfill, hydrostatic testing, and post-construction restoration, rather than the in-service inspection of a single completed asset type.
The exam runs 115 questions across 3 hours, computer-based. Only 100 of the 115 questions are scored, the remaining 15 are unscored pretest items. Personal reference materials aren't permitted, but unlike API 577, 580, and 936's fully closed-book format, API 1169 provides both U.S. and Canadian government-based reference materials directly on the exam computer, candidates can use either set to answer any question, since the exam has been updated to address both countries' governing documents.

API 510, 570, and 653 certify in-service inspection of a completed, operating asset, pressure vessels, piping, and storage tanks respectively. API 1169 certifies inspection during construction itself, before a pipeline ever goes into service, covering the full sequence of construction activities rather than a fixed asset's ongoing condition.
Eligibility is also structured differently: API 1169 offers five separate qualification categories based on different combinations of education, experience, and prior certifications, rather than a single combination-route table or an auto-qualify path from another API certification. Candidates apply directly through API's Individual Certification Programs (ICP) portal, not through EIM or any third-party training provider. Exams are administered at Prometric testing centers during specified testing windows throughout the year.
