Why this matters

The problem this solves

A relief valve that passes its bench test is not the same as a relief system that would protect the plant, and the difference is almost never in the valve.

Most relief work in practice is device-level: pop test, reseat, reinstall, record. The system-level question — is the sizing basis still valid, does the header have the capacity for the governing simultaneous case, and what happens to backpressure when it does — is asked far less often, and it is where the exposure sits.

This programme works both levels. API 520 and 526 for the device, API 521 for the system and the governing scenarios, API RP 576 for the inspection regime, and the debottlenecking question that arises whenever a unit has been uprated since the relief study was written.

Is this a certification?

The short answer is no, and it is worth being explicit about it rather than leaving it to be discovered later.

What this programme gives you

  • Three days covering both the device and the system it discharges into

  • A revalidation checklist for a relief study after a plant change
  • An EIM certificate of completion

What it does not

  • Not preparation for a certification exam — no certifying body examines this subject
  • No API credential at the end
  • Not a valve technician or bench-testing qualification
  • Not a substitute for a full relief study by a competent engineering contractor

FAQs

Questions people ask first

No. API publishes the standards — 520, 521, 526, 527 and RP 576 — but its Individual Certification Program does not examine relief system engineering as a discipline. Elements of it appear inside API 510 and API 570.

No. It covers what a test proves and how to read a test report, but it is not hands-on bench training and does not qualify anyone to overhaul a valve.

Roughly a third. That is deliberate — device-level work is the part most teams already do, and the header, backpressure and simultaneous-relief questions are the part that usually goes unasked.
