CSWIP 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2 form a strict progression by inspection scope and depth. CSWIP 3.0 covers visual inspection fundamentals with no formal experience prerequisite. CSWIP 3.1 requires 3 years of welding inspection experience, or 2 years as CSWIP 3.0, or 1 year as an instructor or supervisor. CSWIP 3.2, this certification, has only one route in: you must already hold valid CSWIP 3.1, there's no alternative experience-based path the way 3.1 has multiple routes.

CSWIP 3.2 also introduces content the two lower tiers don't test at all: formal assessment of NDT reports (not performing NDT yourself, but evaluating reports produced by NDT technicians) and, optionally, radiographic film interpretation itself for the 3.2.2 variant. This makes 3.2 a genuinely different kind of exam, not just a harder version of 3.1's content.

Candidates enroll through a TWI-approved training provider, not through EIM directly. Before attempting the exam, candidates must provide two passport-size photographs (signed on the reverse) and a current eye test certificate showing near vision and color test results.

Examinations are administered at CSWIP test centres in the UK and internationally. Check your chosen training provider's current course and exam fees, which vary by provider and region, separate from EIM's CSWIP 3.2 self-prep pricing. Certification validity has been cited at up to 10 years by some training providers, though renewal terms should always be confirmed directly against TWI's current published scheme documentation.

CSWIP 3.2 is widely regarded as one of the more demanding welding inspection exams precisely because of its four-section, individually-gated structure. A candidate can perform excellently on three of the four sections and still fail the entire exam if the fourth section, commonly the NDT report assessment or the scenario multiple choice, falls even slightly below 70%. Preparation needs to treat every section as its own pass/fail hurdle, not something an otherwise strong overall performance can compensate for.

The optional 3.2.2 radiographic interpretation pathway is worth a deliberate decision before you commit to it: it adds a genuinely specialized skill (interpreting actual radiographic films across material groups like ferritic steels, austenitic steels, and aluminum alloys) that TWI itself notes does not comply with ISO 9712 NDT requirements, it's a role-specific endorsement, not a substitute for a standalone Level II NDT-RT certification.
