AMPP SICT Senior Internal Corrosion Technologist is the senior tier of AMPP's internal corrosion certification ladder, sitting above the Internal Corrosion Technologist (ICT) and below the Internal Corrosion Specialist (ICS). It certifies that you can do more than recognise internal corrosion: that you can design, direct and defend an internal corrosion control programme across a pipeline system.

AMPP's own exam preparation guide sets the bar plainly. A Senior Internal Corrosion Technologist is expected to have a thorough understanding of electrochemical and corrosion principles, field testing, laboratory analysis, monitoring techniques and mitigation strategies; to be capable of the comprehensive environment assessments needed to develop and manage internal corrosion control programmes; to determine corrective action for high-level internal corrosion problems within a pipeline system; and to conduct and direct all phases of ICDA.

The credential is assessed by a single closed-book theory exam of 75 multiple-choice questions in 2½ hours, weighted heavily towards assessment work - 60% of the paper is Assessment of Internal Corrosion alone. Certification also requires verifiable pipeline internal-corrosion experience, an ethics course, and an approved application. Passing the exam on its own does not certify you.

SICT vs ICT vs Internal Corrosion Specialist (ICS)

The three internal corrosion credentials are a genuine ladder, not variants of one exam. Each requires the one below it or a degree-plus-experience route around it.

Internal Corrosion Technologist (ICT) is the foundational credential, built on the Internal Corrosion for Pipelines Basic (Level 1) course. It certifies working-level competence: recognising mechanisms, applying assessment methods, and carrying out monitoring under direction.

Senior Internal Corrosion Technologist (SICT) is built on the Advanced (Level 2) course. The shift is from performing the work to directing it - selecting between indirect and direct assessment, interpreting ILI data, running all four phases of ICDA, designing monitoring strategy, and judging whether a mitigation programme is actually working.

Internal Corrosion Specialist (ICS) is the top rung and requires an active SICT certification to pursue. AMPP relaunched ICS in August 2026.

One practical difference worth knowing: ICT requires a separate practical exam in addition to its theory paper. SICT's published requirements list a single core exam - the Senior Internal Corrosion Technologist Theory Exam - alongside the experience, ethics and application requirements.

Qualification & Prerequisites

Direct Qualification
Bachelor's Degree in Physical Science or Engineering AND 4 years of verifiable internal corrosion-related work experience in a pipeline environment. Plus the Ethics for the Corrosion Professional course (or equivalent training), the Senior Internal Corrosion Technologist Theory Exam, and an approved application.
Combination Route
Without a qualifying degree: 8 years of verifiable internal corrosion-related work experience in a pipeline environment AND an active AMPP Internal Corrosion Technologist (ICT) certification. The ethics course, core exam and approved application requirements are the same on both routes.

What the Exam Actually Tests

Four domains, weighted by question share. This is the map the question bank is built directly against.

01Basics: Corrosion Theory

Composition of a basic corrosion cell and its electrochemical reactions; forms of corrosion, corrosion mechanisms and corrosive species; operating conditions, environments and facilities and how each affects the internal corrosion process.

02Assessment of Internal Corrosion

Indirect versus direct assessment methods and when each applies; gas, liquid and solid analysis; corrosion coupons and electronic probes and their limitations; hydrostatic testing; ILI compatibility, design factors and data interpretation; the four-step ICDA process from pre-assessment to reassessment intervals; system evaluation strategy; monitoring strategy and data interpretation.

03Internal Corrosion Mitigation

Design and operational parameters as mitigation, including materials selection; maintenance pigging; corrosion inhibitors and biocides; conditions influencing chemical selection; selecting the appropriate method for a given internal pipeline environment; operating regimes and pig selection; implementation timing and training; determining programme effectiveness.

04Long-Term Integrity Management

Significance of key data and data relationships; operating conditions that influence data results; components of data interpretation; implementing an internal corrosion integrity plan as directed.

01. Basics: Corrosion Theory

The foundation layer, shared with the Internal Corrosion Technologist body of knowledge. It is assumed rather than taught at this level: SICT candidates are expected to already possess the skills and knowledge required for ICT.

02. Assessment of Internal Corrosion

Larger than the other three domains combined. Six sub-areas: Assessment Methods, Indirect Methods, Direct Methods, Locating Internal Corrosion Damage, System Evaluation Strategy and Techniques, and Monitoring Strategy and Techniques. ICDA alone spans seven separate competencies and maps onto SP 0110, SP 0116, SP 0206 and SP 0208.

03. Internal Corrosion Mitigation

Four sub-areas covering the full mitigation cycle: identifying methods, selecting between them, implementing them, and evaluating whether they worked. The emphasis is on judgement under real operating conditions rather than on cataloguing chemistries.

04. Long-Term Integrity Management

The smallest domain, and a single sub-area: Data Integration. Worth knowing well because it is compact, but not worth the study time its importance in practice might suggest.

How to Register and What to Expect on Exam Day

Candidates register directly with AMPP, not through EIM or any third-party training provider. EIM provides exam preparation material only; we do not administer the exam, process applications or issue the credential.

The exam is delivered as computer-based testing. Total seat time is 2½ hours, made up of 10 minutes for a tutorial and non-disclosure agreement plus 140 minutes for the exam itself. It is closed-book: the course manual is not available to you during the exam, though a reference PDF of conversions and applicable standards is provided on screen.

You will have access to a TI standard or TI scientific calculator within the exam software. A Pass/Fail result is given at the end of the exam, together with a bar chart showing your strengths and weaknesses against each of the four knowledge domains - which is worth reading carefully if you need to resit.

Certification is awarded only once every requirement is met: the work experience route, the ethics course, the core exam and an approved application. Completing a training course does not by itself entitle you to the certification.

How many questions is the SICT exam and how long do I get?
The Senior Internal Corrosion Technologist Theory Exam is 75 multiple-choice questions. Total seat time is 2½ hours, comprising 10 minutes for a tutorial and non-disclosure agreement and 140 minutes for the exam itself.
Do I need an ICT certification before taking SICT?
Only on one of the two routes. With 8 years of verifiable internal corrosion-related pipeline experience you also need an active Internal Corrosion Technologist certification. With a Bachelor's degree in Physical Science or Engineering, 4 years of that experience is sufficient and ICT is not required.
Is there a practical exam as well?

The single most important number on this exam is 60%. Assessment of Internal Corrosion is not merely the largest domain - it is larger than the other three combined, and it is the domain where candidates with real field experience but no structured study most often come unstuck.

Within it, ICDA carries disproportionate weight. AMPP's guide expects you to be familiar with the four-step ICDA process, pre-assessment objectives, feasibility assessment factors, indirect inspection objectives, the application of flow models for system analysis, the detailed examination process, and the post-assessment factors that set reassessment intervals. That is seven separate competencies inside a single sub-domain, and they map directly onto the SP 0110, SP 0116, SP 0206 and SP 0208 methodologies.

The rest of the domain covers choosing between indirect and direct methods and knowing why; gas, liquid and solid analysis; corrosion coupons and electronic probes and the limitations of each; hydrostatic testing parameters and limits; ILI compatibility, design factors and data interpretation; system evaluation strategy; and monitoring strategy including when to recommend corrective action.

By contrast, Long-Term Integrity Management is only 5% - one domain, one sub-area, data integration. Candidates who spend equal study time across the four domains are spending twelve times too long on the smallest one.
