API 510 tests two different skills on one day: recall under time pressure in the closed-book part, and fast navigation of ASME Section VIII and API 510 in the open-book part. This plan trains both, and gives the calculations the time they need.
Short answer: spend the most time on two areas: in-service inspection under API 510 (corrosion rates, remaining life, intervals) and the ASME Section VIII calculations. Practise the open-book part on PDFs, and sit full timed mocks in the last three weeks.
The documents
Your exact list is on the effectivity sheet for your window, which API publishes on its API 510 page. The core is API 510 and ASME Section VIII, Division 1, with supporting documents including RP 572 (vessel inspection practices) and listed RP 571 damage mechanisms.
A 12-week plan
Weeks 1 and 2: API 510 itself
Read API 510 twice. Know the definitions, who is responsible for what, and how the code is organised. Many closed-book questions come straight from it.
Weeks 3 and 4: corrosion rates, remaining life and intervals
Short-term and long-term corrosion rates, remaining life, and how they set internal, external and on-stream inspection intervals. Practise until each calculation takes you a couple of minutes. Our corrosion rate and remaining life worked examples are a good place to start.
Weeks 5 to 7: ASME Section VIII calculations
Shell and head thickness, MAWP, joint efficiency, and how radiography choices change it. These are the open-book calculation questions. Learn where each formula and table sits, not just the formula.
Week 8: repairs, alterations and rerating
The difference between a repair and an alteration, who has to approve each, welding and heat treatment requirements, and what rerating involves.
Week 9: pressure testing, NDE and welding
Hydrostatic and pneumatic tests, and the welding and NDE content listed for your window.
Week 10: inspection practices and damage mechanisms
RP 572 and the listed RP 571 mechanisms: where damage occurs in vessels and how it is found.
Weeks 11 and 12: timed practice
Full mocks under exam timing: 110 closed-book questions in 2 hours 45 minutes, then 60 open-book in 3 hours 45 minutes. Review every miss and note the clause. Read API exam day, step by step in your final week.
Habits that help
- Check units and inputs before you calculate. Right maths on the wrong number is the most common open-book loss.
- Practise on PDFs, since that is how the codes appear on screen.
- Keep an error log by topic, and revisit it weekly.
Before you start
Check your eligibility and the windows and deadlines, then count back 12 weeks. Exam details and sample questions are in our API 510 certification guide.
