AMPP Corrosion Technologist Exam: Eligibility, Format and Fee

AMPP's Corrosion Technologist certification covers corrosion control across disciplines: cathodic protection, coatings, materials, internal corrosion and chemical treatment. Here is who can apply, how the exam works and what it costs, checked against AMPP's own page on 16 October 2026.

Short answer: you need 4 years of verifiable corrosion-related work experience and the Ethics for the Corrosion Professional course. The exam is a written theory exam: 100 multiple-choice questions in 180 minutes, closed-book, by computer. The certificate is valid for 3 years.

Who can apply

AMPP lists two paths. Both need the same base:

  • 4 years of verifiable corrosion-related work experience, and
  • the Ethics for the Corrosion Professional course, or equivalent approved training.

Path A (experience) stops there. Path B (experience plus a credential) adds a training credential, such as an active Corrosion Technician certification or Corrosion Foundations micro-credential, an active CP1, CP2, CP3 or CP4 certification, or completion of the CIP Level 1 course. AMPP describes Path B as best for people who already hold AMPP credentials. Check the exact combination with AMPP before you apply.

AMPP is aimed at metallurgists, corrosion and equipment engineers, design engineers, and supervisors with corrosion responsibilities. You apply, and upload your documents, through AMPP's certification portal. From your application, you have four years to complete all the requirements.

The exam

  • 100 multiple-choice questions in 180 minutes: about 1 minute 48 seconds a question.
  • Closed-book, in English, by computer at a location you select when you schedule.
  • Covers nine domains, including cathodic protection, protective coatings and surface preparation, metallurgy and material selection, internal corrosion and chemical treatment.

The breadth is the challenge. Many questions sit between two disciplines, such as cathodic protection and coatings working together, so studying each area in isolation is not enough.

The fee

AMPP's fee schedule, effective 1 July 2026, lists the Corrosion Technologist exam at US$385 (computer-based). A retake costs the same, US$385.

  • You pay when you buy the exam, on AMPP's website or in your My Certification Portal, by card, cheque, PayPal or bank transfer.
  • The exam authorisation covers one attempt and is valid for one year. If it runs out before you sit, you pay the full fee again.
  • AMPP does not refund the fee because of a failed exam or a denied application.

For comparison, the same schedule lists Corrosion Technician at US$275 and Senior Corrosion Technologist at US$385. AMPP can change its fees without notice, so check the current schedule before you pay.

Keeping it

The certification is valid for 3 years, and you recertify every 3 years. Recertification is not automatic: you reapply and are approved.
